Controlled blasting at Roma Street
As part of the excavation of the underground station cavern and adits, the Cross River Rail Tunnel & Stations contractor will soon commence controlled blasting at the Roma Street site.
The Roma Street site contains areas of very hard rock. To break through this rock, controlled underground blasting will be undertaken in conjunction with other excavation methods.
The project team is planning to conduct small trial blast(s) within the underground cavern from mid- November 2020, site conditions permitting.
Following successful trial blasts, the project team will move to production blasting.
Controlled blasting will be carried intermittently at the Roma Street site from late 2020 until late 2021.
Blasting will be carried out between 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday. Blasts will not take place on Sundays or public holidays.
Nearby residents and businesses will be notified at least 48 hours’ ahead of controlled blasting.
An SMS alert will be issued 4 hours prior to controlled blasting.
What to expect
A siren will sound near the blasting area prior to the blast.
Residents and businesses within approximately 200 metres of the blasting area may hear and feel the controlled blast. The sound is
similar to that of rumbling thunder and some slight vibration may be felt.
Roma Street train and bus station will continue to operate as normal during blasting.
