Exhibition station construction update - May 2022

During April 2022, the final section of the new twin track bridge deck at Exhibition station was complete. In May 2022, bridge and retaining wall construction will continue in preparation for the installation of ballast, sleepers and track.

 

Details of work

The following activities are scheduled to occur between 6:30am and 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday during May 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting:

  • Earthworks for retaining wall backfill between O’Connell Terrace and Bowen Bridge Road
  • Concrete pours for the Exhibition station twin track bridge
  • Installation of mast foundations and structures for overhead electrical lines, cable routes and pits within the rail corridor between Campbell Street and south of Bowen Bridge Road
  • Rock excavation within the rail corridor between Campbell Street and Bowen Bridge Road
  • Steel fixing and concrete works adjacent to Bowen Bridge Road and O’Connell Terrace bridges for ongoing pier protection works
  • Surveying and investigating underground services, such as water, electricity and gas
  • Track work and maintenance.

 

Out of hours work

Additional activities will occur outside the project’s normal working hours, as outlined below.

In Spring Hill and Bowen Hills , intermittently between 6:00pm and 6:00am throughout May 2022, the following works will occur:

  • Concrete deliveries and pours
  • Installation of cable routes and pits within the rail corridor including pulling new cables in conduits
  • Minor earthworks for retaining wall backfill
  • Track work and maintenance.

From Roma Street to Bowen Hills intermittently between 2:00am Saturday 30 April to 10:00pm Friday 6 May 2022, the following works will occur:

  • Installation of overhead electrical structures, signaling equipment, cable routes and pits within the rail corridor.
  • Excavation and concrete works including placement of formwork, steel fixing and concrete pours within the RNA Showgrounds
  • Continuing construction of the twin tack rail bridge for Exhibition station
  • Earthworks for retaining wall backfill between O’Connell Terrace and Bowen Bridge Road
  • Track work and maintenance.

What to expect

During these works you may notice some intermittent disruptions such as:

  • Light vehicles, trucks and machinery including excavators with hydraulic hammers, mobile cranes, small power tools, drills, saws, minor vibrating equipment and mobile lighting towers to light the work areas at night
  • Use of large machinery such as excavators with hydraulic hammers to remove rock and concrete structures around Exhibition station and load material into trucks for transport
  • Changes around your local area such as construction vehicles, traffic management signs and personnel
  • Intermittent closures of the pedestrian underpass beneath Exhibition station. Please follow the signage and directions of traffic control in the area
  • Increased levels of noise, vibration and dust associated with the use of heavy machinery and equipment
  • Access into the rail corridor will be via the Victoria Park access road, Bowen Bridge Road, Lanham Street and O’Connell Terrace via the RNA Showgrounds.
