Albert Street controlled surface blasting
Work is underway at Albert Street to construct the new underground Albert Street station. The Albert Street station main station entrance site (Lot 1) contains areas of very hard rock. To break through this rock, the project team will undertake controlled blasting in conjunction with other excavation methods.
Controlled blasting is undertaken at regular intervals to progress excavation of the main station entrance site. Controlled blasting will be carried out in Lot 1 from mid-June 2021 to January 2022.
Blasting will be carried out between 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday. Blasts will not take place on Sundays or public holidays.
Nearby residents and businesses will be notified at least 48 hours ahead of controlled blasts. Residents and businesses within approximately 200 metres of the blasting area may hear and feel the controlled blast.
What to expect
- A siren will sound near the blasting area prior to the blast
- Residents and businesses within approximately 200 metres of the blasting area may hear and feel the controlled blast. The sound is similar to rumbling thunder and some slight vibration may be felt
- As an additional measure, during each blast there may be brief pedestrian and traffic stoppages for up to 10 minutes in the Albert Street station area. Signage will be installed around the area to inform pedestrians and motorists. Please follow all directions of traffic controllers.
