Albert Street Construction

The new Cross River Rail Albert Street underground station will provide improved public transport to residents, students and workers in the southern end of the city, creating a new hub at the corner of Albert and Mary Streets. A second station access point near Elizabeth Street will provide easy access to the Queen Street Mall.

To enable construction of Cross River Rail, the section of Albert Street between Mary and Elizabeth streets is now closed to vehicles (access to the Royal Albert Hotel is maintained). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction. For the latest information, check out the links below.

Albert Street station construction update - June and July 2026

The main station entrance (Lot 1) continues to take shape, with metal façade cladding and architectural louvres being installed along the canopy and the sides of the station building. At the former acoustic shed site (Lot 2) concrete removal works are complete, with some final earthworks ongoing. At the northern station entrance (Lot 3), station fit-out activities are continuing, with crews focusing on the entrance level architectural façade and installation of flood barriers.

From late April to early July 2026, the footpath in front of the northern station entrance (Lot 3) will be temporarily closed. These closures are required to support ongoing northern station construction works, including installation of the canopy glass, metal façade cladding, the flood barrier and final paving.

Green Spine - Pedestrian Access Update - Charlotte and Mary streets

From Monday 2 February 2026 for up to eight weeks, a new work area will be established on Albert Street between Mary and Elizabeth streets. Work will be carried out during day and night, seven days a week, subject to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Albert Street concrete slab removal – Lot 1

From late May, through to mid- July, work to remove the temporary concrete slab from under the Lot 1 station canopy will occur. Removal of the slab is required to enable Albert Street Green Spine works to progress in front of the station.

Mary Street and Albert Street intersection temporary full closure and detour 7:00pm Friday 12 June to 5:00am Monday 15 June 2026.

Mary Street - Temporary full road closure and pedestrian gantry closure - June 2026

From 7:00pm Friday 12 June to 5:00am Monday 15 June 2026, a temporary full closure of Mary Street near the Albert Street intersection will be in place to facilitate the removal of the crane on top of the Albert Street station building (Lot 1). During this time, the pedestrian gantry between Charlotte and Mary Streets will also be closed.

Albert Street concrete slab removal - Lot 2

From Monday 30 March through to mid-June 2026, the concrete slab and foundations of the former Acoustic Shed at the corner of Albert and Mary streets (Lot 2) will be removed.

Intermittent lane closures will be required on Elizabeth Street between 6:30pm and 6:30am until late 2026.

Elizabeth Street – temporary lane closures until late 2026

From late March to late 2026, intermittent night-time lane closures will be in place on Elizabeth Street at the Albert Street intersection between 6:30pm and 6:30am to support Green Spine footpath reconstruction and ongoing utility, service works. During this time, vehicle access will be maintained with a reduction in lanes only.

Intermittent lane closures will be required on Elizabeth Street between 6:30pm and 6:30am until late 2026.

Charlotte Street – temporary lane closures until late 2026

From late March to late 2026, intermittent night-time lane closures will be in place on Charlotte Street at the Albert Street intersection between 6:30pm and 6:30am to support ongoing utility, service and Green Spine footpath works. During this time, vehicle access will be maintained with a reduction in lanes only.

To support construction of the new Albert Street station, traffic and pedestrian access changes are in effect on Mary Street near the main station entrance (Lot 1) and are expected to remain in place until late 2026.
