Albert Street Construction

The new Cross River Rail Albert Street underground station will provide improved public transport to residents, students and workers in the southern end of the city, creating a new hub at the corner of Albert and Mary Streets. A second station access point near Elizabeth Street will provide easy access to the Queen Street Mall.

To enable construction of Cross River Rail, the section of Albert Street between Mary and Elizabeth streets is now closed to vehicles (access to the Royal Albert Hotel is maintained). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction. For the latest information, check out the links below.

Albert Street station construction update - April and May 2025

In April and May and throughout 2025, the acoustic shed at Lot 2 will be removed in sections, jump form construction is ongoing at Lot 1, and mechanical and electrical installation is ongoing as well as fit-out on the station’s canopy roof at the northern station entrance site (Lot 3).

From late March 2025, sections of the Lot 2 acoustic shed will be dismantled and removed from site.

Mary Street temporary full road closure - service investigation works - April 2025

From 8pm Friday 4 April to 5am Monday 7 April 2025, a temporary full road closure will be required at the intersection of Albert and Mary streets to locate and confirm underground services.

Mary Street temporary full road closure - concrete pour

Due to recent wet weather, the Mary Street full road closure has been rescheduled to 7:30pm Monday 31 March to 7am Tuesday 1 April 2025. This closure is required to conduct a large concrete pour for a floor slab of the future Albert Street main station building (Lot 1). During the pour, the concrete pump will be positioned on Albert Street.

Rescheduled due to weather event – Mary Street temporary full road closure - March 2025

Due to weather event Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred last week, the Mary Street temporary full road closure has been rescheduled to 7pm Wednesday 19 March to 4am Thursday 20 March. During this work a section of Mary Street will be closed to vehicle traffic in both directions near the Albert Street intersection. This closure is required to trim vegetation adjacent to the Albert Street main station entrance (Lot 1).
