Albert Street Construction

The new Cross River Rail Albert Street underground station will provide improved public transport to residents, students and workers in the southern end of the city, creating a new hub at the corner of Albert and Mary Streets. A second station access point near Elizabeth Street will provide easy access to the Queen Street Mall.

To enable construction of Cross River Rail, the section of Albert Street between Mary and Elizabeth streets is now closed to vehicles (access to the Royal Albert Hotel is maintained). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction. For the latest information, check out the links below.

Albert Street station construction update - October and November 2025

Fit-out of the main station entrance (Lot 1) is progressing, with delivery and installation of escalators underway, in the underground cavern (Lot 2), mechanical and electrical works continue in front-of-house and back-of-house areas, and activity at the northern station entrance will include installation of structural steel and bronze aluminium cladding on the station entrance and canopy.

From Wednesday 8 October for up to one week, pedestrian stoppages and nighttime closures of the pedestrian gantry between Charlotte and Mary Streets will be in place. These closures are necessary to facilitate changes to Green Spine work areas between Charlotte and Mary Streets.

Green Spine – Pedestrian access update - September 2025

From the week commencing Monday 29 September until late October 2025, pedestrian changes will be required to establish a new work area on Albert Street between Charlotte and Elizabeth streets (refer to map below). Work will be carried out during day and night, seven days a week, subject to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Albert Street night-time footpath closures - August 2025

From mid-2025 until early 2026, the footpath in front of the northern station entrance (Lot 3) will continue to be intermittently closed at night between 6:30pm and 6:30am. These closures are required to carry out fit out work on the northern station entrance (Lot 3) and continue construction of the new Albert Street public realm (Green Spine).

From late July 2025, new work area will be established between Elizabeth Street and Charlotte Street.
