Albert Street Construction

The new Cross River Rail Albert Street underground station will provide improved public transport to residents, students and workers in the southern end of the city, creating a new hub at the corner of Albert and Mary Streets. A second station access point near Elizabeth Street will provide easy access to the Queen Street Mall.

To enable construction of Cross River Rail, the section of Albert Street between Mary and Elizabeth streets is now closed to vehicles (access to the Royal Albert Hotel is maintained). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction. For the latest information, check out the links below.

Albert Street station construction update - June and July 2025

Throughout June and July 2025, tiling will begin on the platform level inside the station cavern (Lot 2), the above ground station suspended slabs are continuing and glass glazing is underway inside the escalator atrium.

From late March 2025, sections of the Lot 2 acoustic shed will be dismantled and removed from site.

Albert Street night-time gantry closures

From Monday 26 May 2025 for up to two weeks, the Albert Street pedestrian gantry between Charlotte and Mary Streets will be closed nightly between 6:30pm and 6:30am. These closures are required to install permanent electrical services for the new station.

Mary Street - temporary full road closure - May 2025

From 7:00pm Monday 26 May to 5:00am Tuesday 27 May 2025, Mary Street will be closed near the intersection of Albert Street.

Extended: Mary Street acoustic shed removal works

Due to unforeseen circumstances, lane closures on Mary Street are extended to mid June 2025 to allow a mobile crane to safely remove the front sections of the Lot 2 acoustic shed.

Albert Street night-time footpath closures - May 2025

From Monday 12 May through to mid 2025, the footpath in front of the northern station entrance (Lot 3) will be intermittently closed at night between 6:30pm and 6:30am. These closures are required to carry out steel and façade installation on the canopy roof.

Mary Street and Albert Street Temporary Intersection Closure - April 2025

From 7pm Thursday 17 April to 6am Tuesday 22 April 2025, a temporary full road closure of the Albert and Mary Street intersection will be required to install permanent underground services.
