Gold Coast Line

Cross River Rail is transforming the way we travel across all of South East Queensland. The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority is continuing with planning of three new rail stations on the Gold Coast Line to help connect South East Queensland’s growing population. Stations are being planned for Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac.

The new stations will feature:

  • onsite parking and passenger drop-off facilities
  • connections to pedestrian and cycle paths
  • key accessible features such as parking, wayfinding signage and platform access
  • integration with the current public transport network and improvements to nearby intersections
  • Lighting and CCTV throughout car park and station

Procurement for major construction contractors

Hope Island station project

The Delivery Authority has engaged Acciona Georgiou Joint Venture (AGJV) to deliver Hope Island station. For more information please visit the Hope Island station webpage.

Merrimac Station Project

Following Registrations of Interest for a contractor to deliver the major design and construction for Merrimac Station Project, shortlisted proponents have now moved into the Request for Offer (RFO) phase. Procurement activities will continue until early 2023.

Pimpama Station Project

Expressions of interest to deliver the major construction for the Pimpama Station Project are now closed. The Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase has commenced with procurement activities continuing throughout 2022.

What's next

Delivery of the New Gold Coast Stations is being undertaken as a program of works. Procurement activities for a contractor to finalise designs and construct each of the stations are currently underway.

Early investigations are continuing across all three sites including traffic, hydrology, noise and environment assessments to further refine and finalise the design in preparation for construction.

Feedback from the community and key stakeholders is being used to inform the final designs for construction and information around the final designs will be made available to the public.

Construction to enable station access at Pimpama station is being undertaken as an early works package. The works commenced in late 2021 and include a new signalised intersection at Bedford Road and the Old Pacific Highway, access road into the site with associated drainage works and connecting pedestrian and cycle pathways. These works are planned to be completed in 2023.

  • Overall, feedback from the community and stakeholders indicated support for the new stations on the Gold Coast Line.

During the consultation period over 1150 people provided feedback through online surveys, community drop-in sessions, stakeholder meetings, emails and phone calls to the project team.

    Summary of feedback

A summary of the feedback received during the consultation period included:

    • Increase parking capacity at each station to minimise parking overflow
    • Manage noise and visual impacts on surrounding properties
    • Incorporate lighting and security into station design
    • Ensure traffic conditions around each station remain safe and efficient
    • Improve connecting bus services as well as pedestrian and bicycle accesses
    • Minimise impacts on green-space including vegetation and fauna
    • Change the Helensvale North Station name to Hope Island Station.

    What’s next?

Concept designs for each station will be developed during the detailed design and procurement phases. All feedback received during the consultation period will be considered and further community consultation on the detailed designs will be undertaken in 2021.

As part of the detailed design phase, additional studies will be undertaken including construction methodology, noise modelling, traffic modelling, flood modelling and flora and fauna studies. These studies will also be used to further refine the designs and identify appropriate mitigation measures.

The purpose of this document is to describe the background, objectives, and high-level scope of three new infill train stations being planned on the Gold Coast to Brisbane rail line, at Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac

Benefits for the Gold Coast Line

Cross River Rail will unlock a bottleneck at the core of our transport network and it will transform the way we travel across the whole of South East Queensland and create capacity on the Gold Coast for:

  • a train leaving for Brisbane as often as every 5 minutes on average in the morning peak on the Gold Coast line
  • a train leaving for Brisbane every 15 minutes on average in the morning peak on the Beenleigh line (from Beenleigh station)
  • fewer road users on the Pacific Motorway, with an estimated 47,000 more people across choosing rail over road by 2036.

The new stations will reinvigorate public transport in key growth areas on the Gold Coast line, delivering new Park ’n’ Ride facilities and providing a stimulus for enhanced bus connections and future economic development.
