How we designed uniquely Queensland underground stations

The four new underground stations being delivered as part of Cross River Rail will each have their own unique station entrance.

And the thinking behind why each one will look the way it does is absolutely fascinating, paying homage to South East Queensland’s subtropical climate.

“There was a really key moment where one of the guys in the office drew this drawing of a big fig tree in the botanical gardens with the light coming through,” Hassell designer David Gowty explains.

“And then there was another drawing next to it where he just draws the (station) canopy; we put some perforations in it and the light comes through.
“And that was sort of the light bulb moment.”
