Woolloongabba Site – Early Works

Once fully cleared, the area between Vulture Street and Stanley Street in Woolloongabba, directly adjacent to the Woolloongabba Busway, will become the staging area for the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and Roadheaders. These TBMs will be used to drill the twin tunnels after which the site will become the location of the new underground Woolloongabba station.

Upon completion of demolition works, the Landcentre, Dental Hospital and Goprint sites will become the first full station site prepped and ready for Cross River Rail construction.

Works to demolish the nine-storey Landcentre building started in September 2018, and was completed in early February 2019.

Site remediation works, including the removal of demolition waste materials, will continue until mid-2019. Temporary closure of some footpaths and roads in the area is required from time to time during this work.

Type of works

The Goprint site demolition was completed in February 2018 and testing showed that decades of industrial use means the entire site (including the Landcentre) is listed as contaminated on the Environmental Management Register (EMR). The site requires significant remediation works, including the excavation of significant amounts of soil down to a depth of up to four metres in some instances.

This includes the soil which supports vegetation and trees on the site, meaning the trees and supporting root structures must also be removed. Due to levels of soil contamination any attempts to relocate the existing vegetation is not feasible and would result in the potential transportation of contaminated soil attached to the root structures.

Community consultation

There has been extensive consultation with the community about the approvals required for the Cross River Rail project extending back to 2010. This includes a full Environmental Impact Statement, a full Co-ordinator General’s report on the EIS and an extensive ‘Request for Project Change’ submitted to the Co-ordinator General.

Throughout all of these stages, widespread consultation with the community was required to support the granting of formal approvals.

Going back as far as 2011 (EIS) the vegetation at Woolloongabba has been considered as part of the approvals for the project to proceed and there have been no public submissions received regarding vegetation impacts.

  • None of the trees on the site are ‘Protected’ under the Environment Protection Biodiversity Protection Act 1999.
  • None of the vegetation is ‘Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened’ under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.
  • None of the vegetation is listed as ‘Significant Landscaping Trees’ under Brisbane City Council’s Natural Assets Laws; and
  • No trees have been identified as heritage listed under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.

Landcentre building and South Brisbane Dental Hospital demolition

DECC Pty Ltd was awarded the $4.52 million contract to demolish the nine-storey Landcentre building and old South Brisbane Dental Hospital at Woolloongabba.

Works at the 16,000-square metre site began in September 2018, and building demolition was completed in February 2019.

Important information about these works

  • Work will mostly be completed between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
  • Work will not be scheduled on public holidays, or during major events at The Gabba Stadium.
  • During works, nearby businesses and residents may experience an increase in noise, dust and vibration. These impacts will be reduced as much as possible by removing internal building fittings first, followed by the building facade.
  • While traffic delays should be minor, traffic controllers will be in place as required to maintain the safety of workers, road users and the community.
  • Truck movements to remove waste will be confined to Leopard street.

Both the Landcentre and old South Brisbane Dental Hospital buildings have been demolished. Site remediation works, including demolition waste removal, will continue until mid-2019.

Goprint demolition

Lawton-based company Caylamax Demolitions was awarded the $330,000 contract to demolish the Goprint building and works began in October 2017 and were completed in February 2018.

In total 11,626.35 tonnes of material salvaged from the Goprint site were recycled through various recycling centres.

  • 10,692.34 tonnes of concrete, equating to 99 per cent of the concrete from site
  • 66 tonnes of scrap metal equating to 95 per cent of the scrap metal from the site
  • 14 tonnes of Black Iron Light Gauge equating to 95 per cent of the iron from the site
  • 27 tonnes of high melting steel (HMS 1) equating to 95 per cent of the steel from the site
  • 2 tonnes of copper equating to 95 per cent of the copper from the site
  • 59 tonnes of general builders’ waste – such as plasterboard, carpets, light timber, non-metal claddings or hard furnishings contained within the structures not composed of concrete or masonry
  • 100 per cent of office and workshop furniture has been recycled
  • 97 per cent of material that left site was recycled, so 2.3 per cent of waste has gone to landfill.
