Controlled blasting for station building passenger tunnels - March 2022

Controlled surface blasting to excavate the passenger access tunnels between the station entry building and the new underground station has commenced.

 

Controlled blasting is scheduled to be carried out at the station building site until mid-2022.

Blasting will be carried out between 9:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday, and 7:30am to 4:30pm on Saturday. Blasts will not take place on Sundays or public holidays.

Nearby residents and businesses will be notified at least 48 hours ahead of controlled blasts.

Exclusion zone: temporary traffic, pedestrian and public transport changes

As an additional safety measure, an exclusion zone will be in place around the site for up to 15 minutes during controlled surface blasting.

The exclusion zone will involve the following temporary changes:

  • Road and footpath closures in both directions on Roma Street between Garrick and George streets.
  • Temporary stoppages for bus stops 121, 122, 124 and 125 on Roma Street.
  • Changes to access for properties on Roma Street between Makerston and George streets.

Access to Roma Street train and busway stations will be maintained, and there will be no impact to train or busway services.

Signage will be installed around the area to inform pedestrians and motorists of upcoming controlled surface blasting.

What to expect

A siren will sound near the blasting area prior to the blast.

Residents and businesses within approximately 200 metres of the blasting area may hear and feel the controlled blast.

The sound is similar to that of rumbling thunder and some slight vibration may be felt.
