Roma Street station construction update - April and May 2025
The Roma Street station fit-out is progressing, with artwork installation complete and tiling underway on the new platforms. Work continues underground and within the main station building, with a focus on mechanical and electrical fit-out, as well as lift and escalator installation.
Permanent underground services installation and streetscape upgrades are ramping up near the Roma Street station site, with changes to signalised intersections and footpath upgrades scheduled to commence in the coming months.
What to expect
Roma Street station construction hours are 24 hours Monday to Friday and 6:30am to 6:30pm on Saturdays unless advised. Some activities may also be required to take place outside of these hours.
During construction, you may notice:
- Increased levels of noise, dust and vibration
- Construction vehicles travelling to and from the worksite via Roma Street
- Delivery of materials and equipment to the worksite including at night
- Temporary traffic and pedestrian changes on Roma Street and surrounding streets.

Roma Street – Opposite Makerston Street
The below works features both day and night work:
- Oversized deliveries to and from site including crawler crane, permanent canopy steel, mechanical and electrical equipment and architectural panelling
- Installation and fit-out of external cladding and architectural panels and glass panels
- Adjusting hoarding and scaffolding requiring hand tools and steel fixing
- Preparatory works including excavation requiring elevated work platforms, cranes, vacuum trucks and hand tools
- Intermittent short-term pedestrian stoppages, partial lane closures, footpath diversions and adjustments to pedestrian gantries along Roma Street
- Installing steel, roof sheeting, guttering and fit-out activities to construct the platform canopy
- Delivering equipment via Roma Street and the busway at night outside of operational hours
- Reconstructing platform 2 requiring a partial lane closure of the busway, installation of hoarding and traffic management barriers, demolition works, steel fixing and concreting
- Demolition of the platform 2 slab and internal walls requiring excavators, jackhammers, saw-cutting, hand tools, elevated work platforms and installation of noise proof matting
- Constructing the lift shaft and stairs requiring concrete trucks, agitators, and pumps
- Platform 1 tie in to canopy pavilion area requiring rain screen installation, scaffolding, formwork, concrete pours, structural steel delivery and steel fixing.

Roma Street – Opposite Garrick Street
The below works features both day and night work:
- Testing and commissioning services including tunnel ventilation systems, communication and control systems and energisation of services
- Construction of driveway and service utility connections involving concreting activities, installation of scaffold, drainage and use of vacuum trucks
- Heavy plant movement including use of cranes and oversized deliveries to site
- Installation of façade and architectural panels. Intermittent footpath and lane closures are required for this activity. Please see Roma Street – temporary eastbound lane and northern footpath closures for more information
- Concrete demolition of temporary internal walls and slabs requiring hand tools and jackhammer
- Installation of underground services from the services building to Roma Street. Further information will be provided closer to work commencing.
Rail corridor work – May 2025
Construction activities will be carried out within the rail corridor at Roma Street station from 2am Saturday 24 to 11:55pm Sunday 25 May 2025. Further information will be provided closer to work commencing, where required.

Surrounding streets and footpaths
Roma, Herschel, Makerston and George streets
The below works features both day and night work:
- Installation of permanent underground stormwater infrastructure including drainage pipes, manholes and gully pits along Roma Street
- Open-cut trenching and pipe installation with road saws, jackhammers, excavators, vacuum excavation trucks, generators, mobile cranes, lighting towers and hand tools
- Upgrades to the footpath on the northern side of Roma Street. Further information will be provided closer to work commencing
- Stop-and-go traffic control arrangements, footpath closures and partial lane closures outside of standard hours
- Installation of permanent underground stormwater drainage between Parkland Boulevard and the western site boundary
- Traffic and intersection changes at the Makerston Street intersection
- Final site establishment works at the Herschel and Roma Street intersection requiring hoarding installation, vegetation removal, asset removal and the adjustment of traffic conditions for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Further information will be provided prior to closure of the road to vehicles.
