Roma Street – road resurfacing and temporary night-time lane closures

From early August 2026 for approximately four weeks, sections of Roma Street, Makerston Street, Herschel Street and George Street will be temporarily closed at night to undertake staged road resurfacing works as part of final upgrades to the Roma Street station precinct.

Work details

Road resurfacing works are planned to be carried out in four stages to ensure vehicle access on Roma Street is maintained in both directions.

Works will involve:

  • Installing temporary fencing and road barriers to safely establish each work area.
  • Implementing traffic control arrangements.
  • Road profiling, road resurfacing, asphalting, installing new detector loops and line marking.
  • Use of machinery including road milling machines, road saws, trucks, earthmoving and roller equipment, asphalt paving and line marking machines.
  • Works are required to be carried out between 6.30pm and 6.30am, due to traffic permitting restrictions on Roma Street.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts

  • Temporary night-time lane closures on Roma Street. One lane maintained in each direction.
  • Temporary night-time intersection or lane closureson Herschel, Makerston and George streets, with local detours in place. Please follow the direction of signage and traffic control officers.
  • Night-time closure of parking bays and loading zones within the work area.
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detours will be in place to maintain access to all businesses and properties.
  • Reduced speed limits through the work areas.
  • Access will be maintained to all businesses, some vehicle and pedestrian stop and holds may occur.

Public transport changes

While works are underway, there will be some temporary changes to bus stops including:

  • Roma Street Stop 124 (Stop Id: 000124)
  • Herschel Street Stop 1 (changes during Stage 1 only) (Stop Id: 000001)

Work hours

Construction activities and the associated lane closures will occur between 6:30pm and 6:30am in line with traffic permit requirements. Work is subject to relevant approvals and suitable weather conditions.

What to expect

  • Sections of Roma Street, Makerston Street, Herschel Street and George Street will be temporarily closed at night throughout each stage of works.
  • You may experience an increase in noise, lighting, vibration, dust, as well as odour from the road base materials.
  • Increase in construction workers and vehicles.
  • Traffic control and signage in place to assist, please follow directions of traffic control where required.
  • Some traffic delays may occur. Please plan your journey and allow additional time if travelling through the area.
