Merrimac station pedestrian footbridge activities

From early July 2026, oversized deliveries of the new Merrimac Station pedestrian footbridge will occur via Gooding Drive, followed by on-site assembly and installation within the eastern rail reserve and rail corridors.

Footbridge delivery

From 7 July 2026, oversized deliveries of the pedestrian footbridge segments and large cranes will occur.

Deliveries will occur from 4:00am, Monday to Friday. Due to traffic, safety and haulage permit requirements, these oversized loads must be transported to site during early morning.

Deliveries will travel under police escort with pilot vehicles and will access the eastern rail reserve via westbound Gooding Drive. Escort vehicles will use flashing lights and relevant signage to safely manage traffic.

If you encounter an oversized load approaching, please:

  • Slow down
  • Move over, if necessary
  • Respond to gestures by the driver and escort vehicle
  • Give way to the oversized load

Footbridge assembly and fit out

Following delivery, the pedestrian footbridge will be assembled and fitted out within the eastern rail reserve. These works must be completed at night due to safety and interface requirements.

Intermittent night works will take place from Monday to Sunday between 7:00pm to 6:00am. Standard daytime works will continue from 7:00am to 6:00pm.

Activities will include:

  • Steel installation and welding activities, requiring the use of rattle guns, handheld tools, cranes and elevated work platforms
  • Construction and fit out of the footbridge segment, including the installation of floors, walls and ceilings
  • Heavy vehicles will continue to transport materials to the site via Gooding Drive (westbound), with light vehicles accessing the area via Entry Drive.

Footbridge installation

The installation of the pedestrian overpass will occur during the following scheduled track closure:

  • From 6:00am Saturday 25 July to 6:00pm Sunday 26 July 2026

Activities will include:

  • Installation of the pedestrian footbridge and stairs, including oversized crane activity to lift the segments into place
  • Welding activities, requiring the use of rattle guns and handheld tools
  • Electrical activities and overhead connection finalisation
  • Platform works, including installation of fencing and steel

What to expect

  • Construction activities may generate increased levels of heavy vehicles, noise, vibration and flashing lights in the area. Every effort will be made to keep these to a minimum
  • An increase in worker and construction presence in the eastern rail reserve, including intermittent noise at night
  • Intermittent use of mobile lighting towers and safety lighting within the eastern rail reserve. Every effort will be made to position these light sources away from properties
