Track closure on the Shorncliffe line for ETCS testing

Customers on the Shorncliffe line are urged to plan their travel in advance ahead of a four-day closure on the line from Monday 28 April to Thursday 1 May.

This closure is required to test the new world-class ETCS signalling system that is being introduced as part of Cross River Rail works.

Shorncliffe line trains will run between Roma Street and Northgate stations in both directions during the closure, with rail replacement buses to run between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations throughout the day.

All services will return to a regular time table from the first service on Friday 2 May.

ETCS is an advanced signaling system which is used in underground lines around the world to allow continuous information to be relayed between trains and the central Rail Management Centre.

The technology will be a key component of the Cross River Rail tunnel operations, and wider rail network in the future, and will lead to increased capacity, efficiency and reliability.

The Shorncliffe line is the pilot line for the new system, with the testing ensuring the system meets safety regulations and operational requirements before testing in the tunnels commences.
