National Science Week 2020 - Celebrating The Science of Tunnelling

Community Consultation, Public Events

Date:15 - 23 August 2020

Location:1/151 Elizabeth St
Brisbane City QLD 4000

Building an underground rail line poses a unique set of challenges. We invite budding scientists of all ages to join us to discuss the Science of Tunnelling at the Cross River Rail Experience Centre in Brisbane’s CBD, or find livestreams and activities you can enjoy at home, below.

Livestream Program

Introduction to Tunnelling with Jeremy Kruger

Explore how a mega infrastructure project like Cross River Rail gets underground. A general overview of what tunnelling is and involves, how we start an undertaking like this, the engineering processes and methodologies, an overview of TBMs and road headers.

Station Design with Keith Allen

Delve into the design of underground stations with architect, Keith Allen. This livestream provides a foundation for a series of design lectures where we will discuss topics like master planning, future planning, and connectivity. Keith will discuss various aspects of station design including station typologies, passenger movement, natural light, spatial composition and the integration of engineering design in complex underground environments.

Online Activities

Check out our Education Program page for engineering and tunnelling themed activities for all ages, that can be completed at home during National Science Week.
