A pioneering Brisbane auctioneer, realtor, author and property valuer who died 116 years ago has been found to still own a unique slice of Brisbane’s CBD.

The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority (CRRDA) discovered Esk Lane, more formally known as 100A Mary Street, remains in the ownership of John Cameron, one of Brisbane’s earliest property developers.

The Delivery Authority discovered the ownership during a formal acquisition process to resume the land for the Albert Street underground station.

Born in Launceston, Mr Cameron moved north to the Sunshine State in March 1861 and is largely responsible for introducing the concept of subdivisions into Queensland.

Mr Cameron was a self-made man of many talents. He was a successful businessman, Alderman for the South Brisbane ward, he published two books and played a big part in shaping the early days of our great City.

He was involved in the creation of Brisbane’s first residential suburb, Waverley Estate at Boggo Road, coincidentally an area that will have a new Cross River Rail underground station.

He also owned several properties including at Moreton Bay, the City and Dutton Park and was the founder of Cameron Bros, which was one of Queensland’s oldest property valuers and real estate agents.”

Cross River Rail will commence acquisition proceedings to resume the land as part of the Albert Street station development.

Albert Street Station is the first CBD station to be built in 120 years, opening up the southern part of the CBD and improving connectivity with QUT, Queen’s Wharf and the City Botanic Gardens.

Major precinct works will start in late 2019 with over 220,000 passengers expected to use the new underground station each week once fully operational.
