UPDATE: Woolloongabba Gibbon Street utility construction
Gibbon Street utility works are progressing well, with the micro–Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) recently completing 60 out of the 80-metre tunnelling journey from the new Woolloongabba station to the Gibbon Street manhole.

TBM removal – Gibbon Street road closure
The micro TBM is expected to reach the Gibbon Street manhole early next week. To remove the machine, Gibbon Street and the Stanley Street service road need to be closed from 6:30am Wednesday 30 August to 6.30am Saturday 2 September.
Please be advised, an increase in noise and light may be experienced during this work and work is subject to wet weather and construction conditions.
During the full closure of the intersection, work will involve:
- Manhole preparation
- Saw cutting
- Removal of the manhole roof slab using a mobile crane
- Removal of the TBM using a mobile crane
- Replacement of the manhole roof slab
- Backfilling and reinstatement of road.

Traffic conditions
During the road closure, traffic will be detoured from Gibbon Street via Stanley Street, Hawthorne Street and Ipswich Road, as shown by image 3. Traffic control during the closure will remain in place to assist motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Ongoing work – Sewer manhole and pipe installation
Following the removal of the TBM, Gibbon Street will be partially reopened (6.30am-6.30pm), as shown by image 3 above. During the day, this area will be used as a laydown area to house plant and equipment required for works.
At night (6.30pm-6.30am), Gibbon Street and the Stanley Street service road closure will be reinstated to allow work in the manhole to continue as shown by image 3 above. After each night shift the worksite will be adjusted, and Gibbon Street and the Stanley Street service road reopened as shown by image 3 above.
During traffic changes, detours and traffic control will be in place to assist motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Access to properties and businesses will be kept open at all times and both the footpath and cycle lanes will be maintained.
These traffic arrangements will be required until late 2023, subject to weather and construction conditions.
