Mary Street - Acoustic shed removal

From late March 2025, sections of the Lot 2 acoustic shed will be dismantled and removed from site.

In 2019, the acoustic shed was installed on Mary Street to reduce construction impacts during underground cavern excavation. As this work is now complete, the acoustic shed will be dismantled and removed until mid-2025, pending weather and relevant permits.

Work details

Work will involve:

  • Unbolting sections of the roof using oxy cutters and rattle guns. Roof sections will then be removed using cranes and trucks.
  • Separating pre-cast concrete wall sections using concrete saws, shears and oxy cutters.
  • Where possible, wall and roof sections will be removed in single pieces via trucks.
  • Where sections are too large, these will be relocated to a stockpile within the shed to be demolished mechanically by excavators with jackhammer attachments.
  • A mobile crane may be required on Mary Street to safely remove sections of the shed roof and steel structure.

What to expect

Increase in noise, dust and vibration associated with the use of heavy machinery and equipment including but not limited to rattle guns, concrete saws, shears, oxy cutters and excavators. An increase in construction workers and vehicles in the area.

Reducing impacts during shed removal

During shed removal, every effort will be made to minimise the impacts on businesses, residents and commuters. This includes:

  • Use of water trucks and other dust suppression devices including hoses and/or misting.
  • Road sweepers to perform routine and additional cleaning when required on-site and on surrounding roads, including Mary Street.
  • Environmental monitoring to ensure adherence to Project Conditions.

Traffic changes

The existing closure of the eastbound lane on Mary Street adjacent to the Lot 1 construction site will remain in place. The pedestrian footpath in front of the Lot 2 acoustic shed will remain closed. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the opposite side of Mary Street. Access to properties on Mary Street will also be maintained. Further information will be distributed if other traffic or pedestrian changes are required.

Work hours

This activity will be undertaken between 6:30am and 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday. Work is subject to relevant approvals and suitable weather conditions. Some work may take place outside of standard construction hours, Monday to Saturday 6:30pm-6:30am due to traffic permit requirements. This may include but is not limited to crane use, deliveries and removal of large equipment, surface assembly works and site facilities adjustments.

Future construction activities

Additional work to decommission the lot 2 site will be undertaken throughout 2025, including backfilling the underground shaft and removing the concrete floor slab. Following shed removal, the lot 2 site will continue to be used for construction staging and storage.
