Project Update

Significant progress is being made on Cross River Rail and continued momentum across eight work sites in total, is supporting local jobs as well as opportunities for local supplier and subcontractor companies.

More than 2400 people are now working on the project and 97% of those workers are Queensland residents. In addition, more than 400 suppliers and subcontractor companies have been utilized to date and more than 90% of these are Queensland companies.

Meanwhile, major milestones continue to be achieved as the project heads towards being one year in major construction.

Two massive Tunnel Boring Machines which will dig Cross River Rail’s twin tunnels, have arrived in Queensland and are being fitted out at TBM specialists Herrenknecht’s north-side facility. The TBMs will be delivered to our Woolloongabba worksite at the end of this year and will commence tunneling in January next year.

At Roma Street, demolition is over 70% complete, with the Brisbane Transit Centre towers and Hotel Jen tower now all down to their lower levels and coach ramps at the western end of the worksite fully demolished. Two roadheaders are also now operating under the Roma Street site and more than 80 metres of tunnel has already been excavated.

At Woolloongabba, the project’s massive four-hectare worksite is a hive of activity with another two roadheaders now at work excavating the station cavern and preparations being made for arrival later this year of the Tunnel Boring Machines.  A large spoil shed is also being constructed and two large worksheds have been erected in the centre of the site, alongside an access ramp that has been constructed to get heavy machinery to and from the station cavern floor.

At the Albert Street station site, construction of a massive acoustic shed is now complete and a roadheader has arrived, which once assembled and tested will begin work in a tunnel shaft that is now complete at 31 metres below ground. Excavation of the station box has also commenced on Lot 1 at Albert Street and Albert Street between Charlotte and Elizabeth Streets has been closed to through traffic as work commences also on the station’s northern entrance.

At the Boggo Road station site, piling works are complete and work continues with excavation of the station box.

To the south of Boggo Road, construction has commenced at Fairfield station, which is the first of six southside stations between Fairfield and Salisbury being given a significant upgrade as part of Cross River Rail.

Finally, work continues in our rail corridors. Including demolition and earthworks at Mayne Yard, site establishment at the Project’s northern tunnel portal between the Roma Street and Exhibition stations and works along the Shorncliffe line, as part of early works to introduce a new world-class signalling system.
