Customers will be able to use a permanent section of the new Roma Street station for the first time from next week, with access to the upgraded busway platform 1 marking an exciting milestone for Cross River Rail station works.

New stairs and lifts will open on Monday 10 August with direct access to the rebuilt western section of busway platform 1.

Located directly within the new station on ground level, the new stairs and lifts are near the fare gates for the underground rail line due to open in 2029.

While the access means that bus services will now be running from the upgraded platform 1, works continue at the eastern end, with temporary hoarding and wayfinding signage in place.

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said this was another example of Cross River Rail and associated works going into operation.

“Being able to open a part of the station to the public like this marks another milestone for the project and another step towards building a better rail network for South East Queensland,” Mr Newton said.

“Customers using the newly opened section of platform 1 will have a great view looking down into the underground station.

“With construction nearing completion, they will be able to watch as the focus shifts to the extensive testing and commissioning program required before the underground line can be operated safely and reliably.”

The new permanent access to busway platform 1 joins a range of works being progressively completed on the project, including six of the seven rebuilt surface stations on Brisbane’s southside, two of three new stations on the Gold Coast, and the new Exhibition station, which reopens temporarily for major events like the Ekka.
