Crucial work completed during Christmas holiday track closures

December and January were busy months for our crews, as we successfully completed a significant amount of work in or next to the rail corridor while trains weren’t running during two separate track closures during the quieter holiday period.
It was all part of the complex, but important, wider program of works that must be completed before the new underground rail path through the core of our network can open in 2029.
We understand track closures can be an inconvenience, which is why they are scheduled during times that are typically quieter like the holidays.
During the first track closure, from 20 December 2025 to 28 December 2025, works centred on the Mayne Yard stabling facility in Bowen Hills. Here, crews installed pieces of the new signalling system and reconfigured the route of existing tracks.
With track closures then continuing in January (3 – 26 January 2026), the works focus shifted to the southside – on areas between Boggo Road and Salisbury station.
Operational testing took place at Salisbury, and at Moorooka some early works for it to be rebuilt into a modern and accessible station were also carried out, including retaining wall construction and inground service installation.
Yeerongpilly now has 400-metres of new rail formation and 300-metres of new tracks.

Dutton Park station, which has been open to the public since October 2024, now has an additional public entrance, with works completed over the track closures at the Kent Street entrance.
Crews also carried out vital work at the new capacity-boosting Clapham Yard train stabling facility on Brisbane’s southside, which could only take place during a track closure because it’s so close to the passenger lines. This included installing 27 concrete beams and pouring the concrete deck for the next stage of the Moolabin Creek bridge, which lets more trains travel over the creek.

During the last weekend of the track closure, Queensland Rail took advantage of the extended closure to complete major reconditioning works on the rail bridge over Birkdale Road.
