Herschel Street work area update - Pedestrian and Cycle Changes – February 2026

From Wednesday 11 February 2026 for up to eight weeks, the temporary shared user path between George and Roma streets will temporarily close for construction. Cyclists will be diverted around the closure via the bicycle lane on George Street.

Work details

Works include:

  • Changes to fencing around the work area
  • Earthworks, landscaping and urban realm works including utilities installation, paving and installation of seating
  • The use of equipment including road saws and jackhammers, vacuum excavation trucks, asphalting work, generators, lighting towers and hand tools
  • Large deliveries to site and plant movement
  • Installation of new traffic signals and line marking

Traffic and pedestrian impacts

During this time:

  • Temporary closure of the Herschel Street shared user path between George and Roma streets
  • Temporary closure of the Herschel Street pedestrian crossing
  • Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted via the signalised crossing at Makerston Street
  • Traffic control and signage will be in place to assist motorists, cyclists and pedestrians

What to expect

During this construction period:

  • Changes to pedestrian and cycle access
  • Increased noise, dust and vibration
  • Increased deliveries and movement of plant, machinery and equipment
  • Increase in personnel carrying out the work
  • Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum

Work hours

Work will occur both during day and night shifts:

  • Night shift, where required, will occur between 6:30pm and 6:30am, Monday to Sunday, due to traffic permit requirements and safety needs
  • All work is subject to relevant approvals and suitable weather conditions

Future pedestrian and cyclist arrangement

When this work is complete, the new shared user path on Herschel Street between George and Roma streets will open. Additional modifications to footpaths, traffic lights, service infrastructure, cycle infrastructure and landscaping in the Herschel Street work area will continue until mid‑2026.
