Delivering skills legacy for Queensland as milestone reached

More than 450 trainees and apprentices have gained valuable experience on Cross River Rail and supporting projects, which will leave a skills legacy in Queensland for years to come.

The 450 target was set prior to construction commencing in 2019, and the major milestone has now been surpassed with 461 apprentices and trainees taking part so far.

Nearly half of all apprentices and trainees have been involved in civil works, including constructing the underground tunnels and stations, rebuilding surface stations and delivering new stations on the Gold Coast.

Other areas trainees and apprentices have gained experience in include electrical works, business administration, building trades, and engineering.

The milestone comes amid a shift in focus from civil construction to testing and commissioning – making it significant that the 450 trainee/apprentices is working on the European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling project.

ETCS is an advanced digital signalling system that enables greater capacity on the rail network by allowing trains to safely run closer together.

Electrical Apprentice Nelson Gaston – our 450th apprentice/trainee – is working on the pilot of the new ETCS digital signalling system, which is part of the Delivery Authority’s wider scope.

Nelson told us he enjoys everything about his apprenticeship and the work the team are doing to improve the transport network in South East Queensland.

In his own words: “It feels absolutely epic to be part of something that will have such a transformative impact on public transport across South East Queensland.”
