Permanent road closure – Herschel Street

From Monday 21 July 2025, Herschel Street will permanently close to vehicles between George and Roma streets.

Work to modify signalised intersections, footpaths, cycle infrastructure and landscaping will take place throughout 2025.

Herschel Street closure and site establishment

From Monday 21 July 2025, Herschel Street will permanently close to vehicles between George and Roma streets.

Temporary fencing will be installed around the work area to allow construction to be safely undertaken throughout 2025.

During construction, access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists between Herschel and Roma streets.

Work details

Work will involve:

  • Installing temporary fencing around the work area
  • Earthworks, landscaping and urban realm works including utilities installation, paving and installation of seating
  • The use of equipment including road saws and jackhammers, vacuum excavation trucks, asphalting work, generators, lighting towers and hand tools
  • Installation of new traffic signals and line marking.

What to expect

  • Installation of new traffic signals and line marking
  • Increased deliveries, movement of plant, machinery and equipment
  • Increase in personnel carrying out the work.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts

  • Herschel Street will permanently close to vehicles between George and Roma streets
  • Once closed, vehicles will no longer be able to access eastbound lanes on Roma Street from Herschel Street
  • Pedestrian and cyclist access between Herschel and Roma streets will be maintained during construction.

Work hours

A majority of the work to change the traffic arrangements will be required to occur at night between 6:30pm and 6:30am, Monday to Sunday, due to traffic permit requirements and for the safety of the community and our workers.

Work is subject to relevant approvals and suitable weather conditions.
