Makerston Street intersection changes
From mid July 2025 for up to two weeks, work will be undertaken as part of changes to the traffic and pedestrian arrangement at the Makerston Street intersection. At completion of the work, a new signalised right-turn movement for vehicles will be available from Makerston Street onto Roma Street.
These changes are being made in preparation for the closure of Herschel Street to vehicles between Roma and George streets.
Work details
Work will involve:
- Implementing traffic control arrangements
- Removal of a traffic island on Roma Street including the use of road saws and jackhammers, vacuum excavation trucks, asphalting work, generators, lighting towers and hand tools
- New line markings and changed traffic conditions.
What to expect
- Increased noise, dust and vibration
- Temporary vehicle and pedestrian detours
- Increase in personnel carrying out the work.
Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
Work hours
A majority of the work to change the traffic arrangements will be required to occur at night between 6:30pm and 6:30am, Monday to Sunday, due to traffic permit requirements and for the safety of the community and our workers.
Work is subject to relevant approvals and suitable weather conditions.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts
- Stop-and-go traffic control arrangements and partial lane closures outside of standard hours
- Traffic control will be onsite to direct motorists during activities such as traffic island removal on Roma Street and line marking.
Access to properties will be maintained throughout the work, and traffic control will be in place to assist.
At completion of the work, a new signalised right-turn movement for vehicles will be available from Makerston Street onto Roma Street.

Future traffic changes
This work is required to prepare for the upcoming closure of Herschel Street to vehicles between Roma and George streets. The timing of this closure will be confirmed and communicated closer to it occurring.
