Removal of Albert Street pedestrian gantry

From mid-June until mid-July 2025, the temporary worker crib rooms and Albert Street pedestrian gantry will be removed.

To safely facilitate this work, pedestrian stoppages and night-time closures of the pedestrian gantry between Charlotte and Mary Streets will be required. Lane closures on Mary Street will also be required at night.

What to expect:

  • Changes to pedestrian and traffic conditions
  • Nightly closures of Albert Street gantry
  • Temporary pedestrian detours
  • Nightly traffic changes on Mary Street
  • Increase in potential noise, dust and vibration
  • Increase in personnel carrying out works

Work details

Work will involve:

  • Implementing traffic control arrangements to establish a safe work area and pedestrian detour
  • Unbolting sections of crib rooms and gantry
  • Lifting sections of crib rooms and gantry from site with cranes and trucks
  • Reinstatement of fencing to delineate the pedestrian footpath and construction site
  • Use of machinery including hand tools, cranes and plant.

Work hours

The work has been staged to ensure safe access is provided for businesses and properties.

Work will be carried out during day and night, seven days a week, subject to wet weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Work will take place during the day 6:30am-6:30pm and at night 6:30pm-6:30am. Work is subject to relevant approvals and conditions.

In the event of wet weather or unforeseen circumstances, this work may be rescheduled. Advance notification will be provided for any changes.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts – day shift (6.30am-6.30pm)

  • Intermittent pedestrian stoppages in the Albert Street pedestrian gantry
  • Each stoppage will be for up to five minutes
  • Existing footpath closures on Mary Street outside Lot 1 and Lot 2 will remain in place.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts – night shift (7:00pm-6.30am)

  • Nightly closures of the Albert Street pedestrian gantry between Charlotte and Mary streets
  • During this time, pedestrians will be detoured via Charlotte, Mary, Edward and George streets
  • Existing footpath closures on Mary Street outside Lot 1 and Lot 2 will remain in place
  • Closure of eastbound lane of Mary Street adjacent to Lot 2 construction site. There will be no access for vehicles travelling from Albert Street to Mary Street
  • Vehicles will be diverted via the westbound lane on Mary Street and via Mary, George, Elizabeth and Edward streets
  • Access to properties will be maintained throughout the work, and traffic control will be in place to assist.
