Merrimac station final design release

The final design for Merrimac station has been released, with locals getting their first look at the station which will provide the Gold Coast community with access to more convenient and accessible rail services.

Merrimac is one of three new stations being built in the region through the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority, with Hope Island and Pimpama stations also under construction.

The new station will be fully accessible with through lifts on each platform, additional accessible carparks and improved wayfinding among the features to enhance connectivity and functionality.

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the station has been designed with the needs of the local community front of mind.

“In addition to the Cross River Rail twin tunnels and underground stations in Brisbane’s CBD, the Delivery Authority is responsible for a range of supporting projects and activities that will help modernise our rail network,” Mr Newton said.

“This includes the delivery of three new stations on the Gold Coast – one of South East Queensland’s fastest growing areas.

“From high-level platforms to the enhanced wayfinding around the station and through lifts on both platforms, this is a station for everyone.

“When open, Merrimac station will not only expand options for travel in and around the Gold Coast, but also for passengers on their way to Brisbane.

“Great progress is being made on site and we are looking forward to seeing the design come to life.”

The station features two new high-level, 155 metre-long-platforms, an elevated footbridge to connect both sides of the station, approximately 200 parking spaces, undercover lock-up bicycle enclosure and a new local bus terminal within the station precinct for improved public transport connectivity.

Major earthworks for the station precinct and carpark have been completed on site, while more than 250 screw piles have been installed for the station’s platform foundations.

Further piling and station platform works are to come, with excavation for drainage and culvert installation to commence soon.

Elsewhere on the Gold Coast, all columns and girders to support the station platforms have been erected at Hope Island, along with lift shaft installation on both sides of the station and platform concreting works.

At Pimpama, significant progress continues including the installation of the pedestrian overpass and stairs, construction of station platforms and drainage and utility works, with progress focused on the station building and fit-out this year.
