Shorncliffe line travel changes

We’re building a better rail network for South East Queensland, but that means temporary changes to some services throughout 2026.

Weekend Passenger Services

From mid-September to late 2026, trains will run as a shuttle service between Shorncliffe and Northgate stations on weekends.

Please change trains at Northgate to continue your journey.

  • Shuttle trains will run about every 30 minutes across the weekend.
  • Some shuttles will run using ETCS digital signalling but customers will not notice any difference while on the train.

Thank you to Shorncliffe line customers and the community for their ongoing patience during these critical works to build a better rail network.

Evening track closures

As part of ongoing testing, periodic Shorncliffe line track closures will be ongoing throughout 2026 for continued testing.

Railbus R348 will replace trains between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations from 7:45pm to last service, each evening:

  • Monday 7 to Thursday 10 September
  • Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 September

Weekend track closures

There are no current weekend track closures currently planned.

When weekend closures occur, Railbus R348 will replace trains between Northgate and Sandgate stations.

The complexity of the ETCS testing program means that at times, closure dates may change.

Travel information

During evening and weekend track closures, Railbus R348 will stop at all stations between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations.

There may be other services that provide you with a better journey. Please allow extra travel time and plan your journey to find your fastest travel option.

Bikes and e-scooters are not permitted on railbuses.

Customers are encouraged to plan their journey in advance by using the links at the bottom of the page.

Why?

The Shorncliffe line is the pilot line for testing a new digital signalling system, the European Train Control System (ETCS). ETCS is progressively being installed to key parts of the South East Queensland rail network, including in the Cross River Rail tunnels and on the Gold Coast line between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes stations.

During this period, you may see trains travelling on the Shorncliffe line and stopping at some stations. These trains are undergoing important testing and are not in service.

Ticket and fare information

Normal fares and conditions apply on all scheduled services.
