New world class signalling system explained

A new world-class signalling system being introduced as part of Cross River Rail is set to revolutionise rail travel across the entire South East Queensland network.

Already in use in cities around the world, the European Train Control System (ETCS) is an advanced digital signing system that relays continuous information between trains and the control centre.

By communicating the speed and position of trains on the network, the technology calculates the optimum speed each train can travel and allows more frequent and reliable services.

ETCS has been installed and is currently being tested on the Shorncliffe line and will be a key component of how trains operate in the new Cross River Rail tunnels before it is then progressively rolled out across the wider SEQ rail network in the future.
