Project Update

Rail customers who travel on the Shorncliffe line are being urged to plan their travel in advance in May, with track closures on the line to test the new world-class European Train Control System (ETCS).

From 4am on Tuesday 7 May to Friday 10 May, the line will close between Shorncliffe and Northgate stations, with timetabled railbuses to replace impacted train services during this time.

Shorncliffe line trains will still operate between Roma Street and Northgate stations, with services returning to normal on Saturday 11 May.

ETCS is an advanced digital signalling system that relays continuous information between trains and rail management via a radio system, trackside technology and onboard equipment.

The new signalling system will be a key component of Cross River Rail tunnel operations and will support increased capacity, efficiency and reliability of the rail network in the future. Learn more about the system via our dedicated webpage.

The testing is an important step to confirm the system meets safety regulations and operational requirements and could not be completed safely or effectively with trains running on the line.
