Roma Street station precinct night works

To facilitate construction of the new Roma Street station building and canopy, night works will be required in the Roma Street precinct throughout 2024.

Crane demobilisation and oversized truck movements

From mid-March 2024 for approximately two weeks, the Cross River Rail Tunnel & Stations contractor will demobilise the eastern tower crane and mobilise a new 800-tonne crawler crane to the Roma Street station site in preparation for construction of the station canopy.

Due to traffic requirements for oversized trucks, this work will take place outside of standard construction hours – 6:30pm to 6:30am.

This work will require intermittent stop-and-hold traffic control and partial lane closures along Roma Street. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all directions of traffic control.

Stormwater installation

From mid-March 2024 for approximately three months, the Cross River Rail Tunnel & Stations contractor will construct permanent underground stormwater infrastructure including pipes, manholes and gully pits within the intersection of Roma Street and Makerston Street.

Due to traffic requirements, construction will take place outside of standard construction hours – Monday to Saturday, 6:30pm to 6:30am.

This work will require temporary partial lane closures and footpath diversions along Roma Street and in the intersection of Roma Street and Makerston Street.

Pedestrian access to Roma Street station will be maintained. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all directions of traffic control.

Works will involve:

  • Open-cut trenching and pipe installation with road saws, jackhammers, excavators, vacuum excavation trucks, generators, mobile cranes, lighting towers and hand tools
  • Pipe installation with a micro tunnel boring machine (TBM) launched from within the Roma Street station site
  • Excavation of a pit in the centre median to retrieve the micro TBM
  • Vegetation removal and/or pruning with chainsaws and mobile elevated work platforms.

What to expect:

  • An increase in noise, dust, vibration and worksite lighting
  • An increase in plant, machinery and equipment
  • An increase in standard and oversized deliveries
  • An increase in workforce presence at night
  • Partial lane closures and footpath diversions around work areas
  • Traffic control and signage directing motorists and pedestrians.

Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of these works on businesses, residents and commuters.

In the event of wet weather or unforeseen site conditions, these works may be extended or rescheduled.
