People who travel at night on the Shorncliffe line are being urged to plan their journey in advance in early February, with track closures overnight to test the new world-class European Train Control System (ETCS).

Part of the Shorncliffe line will close from 7:30pm from Monday 5 February to Thursday 8 February to allow for the important testing to take place.

Timetabled railbuses will replace trains between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations from 7:30pm to the last service of each night.

Trains will continue to operate between the first service of the day and 7:30pm during this period.

Shorncliffe line trains will continue to run between Northgate and Roma Street stations in both directions during the nightly track closure.
 

ETCS is an advanced digital signaling system that relays continuous information between trains and central Rail Management Centre via a radio system, trackside technology and onboard equipment.

The new signaling system will be a key component of Cross River Rail tunnel operations and will support increased capacity, efficiency and reliability of the rail network in the future. You can learn more about ETCS on our dedicated webpage.

Extensive testing over an extended period is required to ensure all parts of ETCS are fully integrated and meet safety regulations and operational requirements.

During testing on the Shorncliffe line, trains will travel on the line and stop at some stations – these trains are undergoing important testing and are not regular train services.

All services will return to a regular timetable from the first service on Saturday 10 February.
