South East Queenslanders are urged to plan ahead next month, with track closures and changes to train services required for nine days from the start of October to allow for important Cross River Rail works.

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said works would impact most lines across the network on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (Saturday 1- Monday 3 October) and would continue to impact some lines until Sunday 9 October.

“Cross River Rail will transform the way we travel in the future, but constructing this megaproject means track closures and changes to services are required,” he said.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused, but the scheduled closures mean crews can undertake major works safely and efficiently in the rail corridor.

“Cross River Rail will be undertaking complex works that will require three days of continuous intensive effort across multiple sites, with an additional six days required in the southern part of the network.”

Mr Newton said although most works were scheduled over the long weekend to reduce impacts on customers, some impacts, predominately on parts of the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines, would extend into the shortened work week and following weekend.

“One of the most significant pieces of work involves 270 metres of track being lowered at Rocklea station, which will ensure the platform surface is step free,” he said.

“Upgrade works will take place at Dutton Park, Fairfield, Yeronga and Rocklea stations, and there will be work completed at Clapham Yard, on the Shorncliffe line and at the project’s northern and southern tunnel portals, which is where trains will enter and exit Cross River Rail’s tunnels.

“Meanwhile, Queensland Rail will complete preventative and maintenance works on the network at the same time to make best use of the track closures.”

Head of Translink Sally Stannard said alternate travel arrangements would be in place during the track closures.

“We have been working closely with Cross River Rail and Queensland Rail to ensure people can still get to where they need to be, including through replacement bus services,” Ms Stannard said.

“Customers on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines in particular should make sure they plan their travel in advance as disruptions on these lines will extend beyond the long weekend into the remaining four-day work week.”
