Roadheader tunnelling update - June 2021

Roadheader excavation works on the Cross River Rail tunnels between the Woolloongabba and Boggo Road sites will commence from mid-January 2021.

Tunnelling

Tunnelling works are continuing to be undertaken 24 hours, 7 days a week in the roadheader tunnels. Tunnelling involves a three-step process: cutting rock, rock bolting and shotcreting (spraying concrete to seal the tunnel interior).

The preferred excavation method to cut the rock is by using roadheaders. When rock conditions are too hard, rock hammers may also be used. This may change the level of noise and vibration experienced on the surface. Where possible, roadheaders will be used to minimise disruption.

Impacts from underground tunnelling activities may be felt at your property for approximately two months.

Cross passages

A cross passage is a short tunnel that connects the two parallel Cross River Rail tunnels. Construction of cross passages will occur below ground within the tunnels after the roadheaders have passed through the area.

Cross passage excavation will occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for up to four weeks.

Cross passages will be excavated using rock hammers. If you are located near a cross passage, we will contact you before work starts.
