Busway at Roma Street going underground

Roma Street Station’s busway interchange will undergo a $250 million transformation and be moved underground to create a seamless connection to the Cross River Rail Project.

Moving the busway underground will be delivered by the Cross River Rail team as an additional public transport infrastructure project and will be co-timed with the construction of a new high capacity underground rail station.

Cross River Rail will not only unlock the bottleneck at the core of transport network and allow more trains to run more often across the whole of South East Queensland, it will support an estimated 7,700 jobs. Including a new, $250 million high-capacity bus interchange at Roma Street which will support 480 of those jobs and makes good a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape the Roma Street Station precinct as a whole.

In total 650 metres of the Inner Northern Busway will be located directly under the Roma Street station plaza, making it easier for commuters to change bus or trains at Queensland’s busiest public transport hub and allowing for better integration of bus services with the new underground train station.

An average of 19,000 people already use the current Roma Street bus station each week day but once Cross River Rail is operational 36,000 passengers are expected to use Roma Street each week day to transfer between buses and trains, helping people travel to, from and through Brisbane and easing congestion on our roads.

The Cross River Rail project will also revitalise the wider Roma Street precinct, with opportunities to replace the tired Brisbane Transit Centre with new public spaces, entertainment destinations, retail premises and commercial buildings.

And at the centre of it all a new Roma Street station plaza will be built on top of the busway interchange, with underground train and bus levels linked by lifts and escalators for easy passenger access.

Cross River Rail has recently announced the major contractors that will be building the new Roma Street station and they are expected to establish a site presence to begin demolition of the Brisbane Transit Centre by late 2019.
